What to do after a car accident in NSW

General information only. This article is not legal advice. Laws change and vary by state and territory.

A crash is stressful, but the steps you take early protect your health and any later claim.

At the scene

  • Check for injuries and call 000 if anyone is hurt.
  • Exchange details: names, licences, registration, insurer.
  • Take photos of the vehicles, position and damage.
  • Report to police if required (injuries, failed breath test, or damage over the threshold).

In the first days

  • See a doctor even for seemingly minor pain — injuries can surface later.
  • Notify your CTP insurer within the time limit (in NSW, typically 28 days for full benefits).
  • Keep every receipt and record of time off work.

If you were injured

CTP covers injuries, not vehicle damage. The insurer assesses your claim and may arrange treatment. Don't accept a quick settlement before you understand the full extent of your injuries.

Bottom line

Deadlines are strict and state-specific. Ask the assistant to list the early steps for your state, then speak to a personal-injury lawyer if you are hurt.
